Book Review – Nickel and Dimed - May/2006
Those with education, solid parenting, proficiency in English and good health are usually able to secure decent jobs or professions, especially in combination with a spouse who is also employed. There is always the hope of upward mobility and we see it happening all of the time. My family background is from the Holly Park projects with constant tension between my parents about money. Without kindly people who trusted us there would have been no fuel oil for heat and not enough money to buy car insurance.

One of the most exciting things for me is when I learn something that changes previously held views and challenges my thinking. This is what happened with a powerful little book by Natan Sharansky, “The Case For Democracy – The Power of Freedom to Overcome Tyranny and Terror”. In the 1970’s I was active in the Soviet Jewry movement to allow a basic human right – freedom of emigration. In 1974 I spent nearly a month in the Soviet Union meeting with Soviet Jewry dissidents (refusniks) bringing them information and taking out information about their plight. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime/December 2005
A good friend of mine, an 11 year-old I dearly love, is mildly autistic. It means that he is hard-wired slightly differently. He is extremely intelligent, has a deep curiosity about many things and has a sense of humor that could be on stage. Because of him, I have my antennae up for articles and books on autism. This condition has many levels and shades – each person is different. Mysteriously, its rate of incidence is growing rapidly with lots of theories but no hard evidence of risk factors.
